The Work of Shaun McMahon
![]() |
Shaun started his railway career on the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales, initially as a volunteer, before becoming a paid employee. He moved up the ranks to become a locomotive driver and Technical Assistant to the Workshop Manger at the FR's Boston Lodge facility. Whilst on the FR he started to develop an active interest in developing steam locomotives as opposed to 'just' preserving them. |
From the FR Shaun moved to the Brecon Mountain Railway and on to the other other line owned by Tony Hills - the Vale of Rheidol based at Abersytwyth. He spent five years on the VoR as Locomotive Foreman. Here experimentation and design work was undertaken to improve the GWR designed locos on the line.
The
May 1994 issue of the now defunct British railway magazine Railway World
carried an interesting article by Shaun on oil firing entitled "Oil
Fired Steam on the Welsh Narrow Gauge." Remember this is now
over 10 years old but none the less is an excellent summary of work undertaken
to that date. Click here
to read it. |
Whilst on the VoR Shaun went in to business with Nigel Day forming 'Day & McMahon Steam Technical Services'.
A summary biography up to early 2006, in Adobe Acrobat PDF format, can be downloaded here.
