Ipswich Railway Museum
13 June 2009
On the final day we made a trip out to the suburb of Ipswich where the state railway museum "The Workshops" is situated. A photo gallery showing the museum can be viewed here or by clicking on the image to the right. We arrived at the museum just in time to join the tour around the workshops. This was just as well - the working locomotives are stored here along with other interesting non-working locomotives like the QR Garratt No. 1009. Sadly this loco needs a lot of work and money before it can run again. It was very interesting to see components and plate in stock ready to build a new boiler for DD17 No.1051. The workshop has already produced a number of all steel welded boilers for other locomotives in the QR mainline fleet. |

We took the Citytrain system out to Ipswich. Above two different electric multiple units are seen at Brisbane Roma Street Station. 13 June 2009
Due to engineering works the routing to and from Ipswich was different. We travelled out the normal way, which seemed to have just one of four lines open, whilst on the return the train took what appeared to be the long way around. At least we were able to use a train instead of the threatened bus!

This bridge links the QR museum with the QR system. It is to be hoped that the bridge is in good order and that it is not, one day, used as an excuse for preventing steam locomotives from the museum accessing the mainline. 13 June 2009

This rather weather worn signal protects access to the bridge from the museum side. 13 June 2009
After Ipswich museum I had the pleasure of meeting up with a long time e-mail correspondent, Mark Gough, for a few hours after which I headed out to the airport and the flights home.
