In 1992 L.D.Porta presented a paper to members of ICOHTEC, in French, reviewing the compound locomotives of André Chapelon. Porta showed how some of Chapelon's best known and most successful types could be improved by the application of the many improvements made to the steam locomotive, and specifically the compound locomotive, since Chapelon's time. Above is shown a sketch of his proposal for a modern version of the legendary SNCF 240P 4 cylinder 4-8-0 compounds. In this proposal Porta advocated his arrangement of three cylinder compounding with piston valves and a gas producer firebox along with many other enhancements. It is to hoped one day the paper will be fully translated to English as it is clearly absolutely fascinating.
