I had not arranged anywhere to stay in Wernigerode so first headed to the local tourist information office. Here I found that the staff only seemed to speak German. However after a few minutes of getting nowhere the chap trying to help me disappeared off to a back room. When he returned he was accompanied by a lady who spoke excellent English ! I got the impression she was kept locked away until needed. With her help I found a room in the excellent 'Schweizer Hof' just a few minutes walk from the narrow gauge station of Wernigerode Westerntor.

Once settled in I headed out to look at the metre gauge Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB). As it was already mid afternoon I decided to make my way back down to the main station which is situated next to the narrow gauge locomotive depot. A short trip behind one of the 2-10-2ts from Westerntor took me to the end of the line at Wernigerode from where I walked round to the shed. Thankfully the staff were very friendly and there was no problem wandering around the depot provided I kept out of the loco shed. A couple of interesting, and historic, locos were on shed.
